Healthy Hair, Happy You

Hey Guys,

I’m always looking for natural remedies to ensure my hair remains in good condition. There are a number of ways to keep your hair healthy and I think the majority of us are aware of these methods. Reducing the amount of heat you use on your hair and not washing it everyday seem to be the most widespread recommendations to ensure your locks remain in tact. I however have been trying out some additional methods and I’ve found that they are working great. I’ve noticed a significant difference in both the appearance and texture of my hair since the introduction. I can honestly say that after implementing these small changes into my lifestyle I certainly wont be going back! It’s nothing drastic. All of them are simple and easily incorporated into your everyday schedule.

Coconut Oil & Castor Oil

I know in  many cases hearing the word oil can instantly draw associations with greasy hair. Coconut oil however is great for nourishing your hair and is renowned for stimulating hair growth. Melt the oil and massage into your roots and the end of your hair. I leave it over night and just clip my hair up. I do however think it is really important to make sure you shampoo your hair twice the next day to ensure all traces of the oil are removed to avoid greasiness.  Coconut oil can be bought in the majority of supermarkets now and is also available in Holland & Barrett and other health stores.

Castor Oil can also have the same effect on hair growth and can be applied in the same manner as listed above. When choosing Castor Oil make sure it is cold pressed as this will benefit your hair the most. I found it quite difficult to find Castor Oil initially but it is available at The Health Food Store

Pukka Castor Oil

Top Tip: Mix the two together to create the ultimate hair care product!

I have read mixed reviews but I personally cannot rave about this product enough! I have been taking one capsule a day and I have noticed my hair not only growing quicker but also thickening too. There are a number of different strengths that you can get, so I would suggest that if you are apprehensive to ease the regime into your lifestyle.

Cushion Pin Paddle Brush

A cushion pin, paddle brush is excellent for smoothing hair without causing damage. If you opt for a wooden version, it will aid in evenly distributing the natural oil in your hair. This will not only reduce the dreaded ‘greasy’ look, it will also result in your hair getting a natural conditioning treatment. I find that this results in me using less conditioner which means I don’t have to wash my hair as often. These kind of brushes can be purchased in almost every store that sells hairbrushes; Boots, pharmacies and even supermarkets. They are generally reasonable enough too.

We are all guilty of mistreating our hair. However these little introductions into your lifestyle can help combat any long term damage. As I said, these small changes have had a significant impact on my hair. I was initially considering the option of getting extensions but now I think that I am going to stick on this path. If the results continue as well as they have been over the last few weeks, I will be one happy bunny!

I hope you are all having a lovely Friday

Altering Santa’s Snacking

Hey Guys,

I was out shopping the other day when I came across something I thought was pretty interesting. It is something different and as you know, I always appreciate a unique twist on the norm. It is due to this that I’ve become intrigued by Keelings’ latest offering. The company have opted to go against the norm and encourage parents and kids to embrace a healthier Christmas. This is being done through their new Santa Snacks campaign. The main idea is to get children to see the importance of consuming healthy snacks and that even Santa needs something a little healthier from time to time.

This is not something I would usually be drawn to however I was recently reading an article which stated that up to 1.8 million adults are at risk of losing 9 years off their lives due to obesity. That is a scary thought. So much can be achieved in 9 years and for someone to lose that opportunity is frightening. Obesity may have plateaued in recent years but it is clearly still a big issue.

I personally think teaching your child to live a healthy lifestyle from a young age is crucial. Little gestures like the Santa Snacks are perfect for communicating to children that there are healthy alternatives out there and that it is important to eat healthy. I am not saying that any child should be put on a diet, I don’t think children should be subject to society’s pressure to have the ‘perfect’ body. I do however think that obesity in many cases is a result of what people have grown up with. If your not taught from a young age that eating well for your body is important, then how will you know?

That is why I love the idea that Keelings are effectively taking this issue head on and making healthy eating fun by incorporating the excitement of Christmas. I also admire that they’re selling these products at a reasonable price. We are all well aware of the sometimes extortionist prices associated with Christmas products. This is thankfully not the case here. I seen the pots being sold at €1.50 which to be fair is not too dear.

The fruit brand have also introduced a new fruit platter for Christmas too, again this is at a reasonable price. Healthy food, particularly novelty healthy food tends to be dearer in general. I think this can be quite frustrating as many companies are often enforcing that healthier lifestyles need to be embraced, but making it expensive and in some cases just not feasible. I’m really impressed that a reputable company such as Keelings is in fact embracing their corporate identity and helping others become a part of it too without feeling the hole in their pockets.

As a marketing graduate, I think it is exciting to see such a unique campaign being introduced over the normal over indulgent season. Keelings are gaining interest from children over the festive season which will hopefully continue into the new year. I’m not for one minute saying people shouldn’t eat what ever they want over Christmas, I know I certainly will. But I just think it’s a great opportunity to keep the healthy lifestyle in their heads so that it is not completely lost behind the abundance of food and sweets. At the end of the day, health is an important issue both mentally and physically and the obesity levels are proof of this. Let’s hope little changes like the ones Keelings are offering actually start to impact this!

I think I will be grabbing a few fruit pots for when I’m on the go!

Winter Warmer Recipe #3

Hey Guys,

I am continuing on with my Winter Warmer category in the quest for healthy yet yummy food. The next recipe I have is for Pizza. This is really easy and quick to make, perfect if you are impatient when you’re hungry. Anyone who knows me will understand my lack of tolerance for being hungry. I am always much nicer when I have been fed! I’m also a big lover of pizza, so this is a nice healthy alternative. The carb level is quite low for this meal, but I would suggest maybe adding sweet potato or something else to ensure you are not left hungry, because then you will either be miserable due to hunger or snacking due to hunger. Neither of which is a good option!

What you Need:

2 Turkey Sausages

1 wholemeal, gluten free wrap

Dolmio Light pasta sauce

1/4 of red, yellow and/or green pepper

1 slice low fat cheese (any cheese of your choice)

4 spinach leaves

Handful of jalapenos

What you do:

Grill the turkey sausages (I use the George Forman)

Chop up all the vegetables

Grate the cheese

Grill the vegetables along with the turkey sausages for the last 2-3 minutes of grilling

Spread 2 tbsp of the sauce over the wrap (add more if you wish)

Place your torn spinach leaves on the wrap

Chop your turkey sausages to go with your vegetables

Scatter 1/2 the grated cheese over the pizza

Add the vegetables and the sausages onto the base

Scatter the rest of the cheese

Cook for approx 7 minutes (depending on your oven, keep an eye on it!)

Et Voila

Honey Remedies for Clear & Softer Skin

Hey Guys,

As you will know from my previous posts, I am a big fan of natural remedies, particularly ones that can be done with as minimal effort as possible. I personally don’t have a lot of spare time so I love to find products that have numerous uses and therefore save not only money but also time and effort. Honey is a prime example of this.

Honey is not only excellent for curbing a sweet tooth and healing a sore throat, it is also fantastic for your skin. Full to the brim of anti-bacterial properties, honey can have a huge impact on skin improvement. Now when I say honey, I mean the purest form you can get. Always try opt for organic, raw honey to avoid any hidden ingredients.

Keeping skin healthy is extremely important all year round, but in Winter, the weather can be quite rough on our skin. Using something natural and gentle on your skin is therefore ideal.

Honey is jam packed full of enzymes that help clear your pores and actually keep them clear. Due to the fact that honey has natural antibacterial properties, it also aids in the prevention of breakouts too. Mixing together 1 tbsp of raw honey with 2 tbsp of coconut oil can act as a perfect, gentle cleanser for your skin. Massage it into your face and rinse well with warm water (NOT hot water!) I’m going to start trying this once I’ve removed my make-up to ensure my skin is completely clear.

Bath Soak

I am not usually a bath person but I think I will have to try this out. I have read that adding 2 tbsp of raw honey to your bath will significantly benefit your skin all over. It will help hydrate and soften your skin leaving you feeling relaxed with super soft skin. Perfect for unwinding after a long week.

Moisturising Face Mask

Honey not only purifies the skin it also aids in hydration. After you have cleansed your skin, spread 1 tbsp of raw honey on your face. Allocate 15 minutes to allow it to set properly and rinse with warm water. Make sure you rinse well, otherwise you will be left with sticky patches on your face; not ideal!

So there you go, one product with numerous different uses, all of which are natural and beneficial to your skin!

Hope you Enjoy 🙂
