Boohoo’s Collaboration is Backing All Women

Happy Hump Day 😉 Today’s post is based around Boohoo’s collaboration with the beautiful plus size model Nadia Aboulhosn. The online retailer and the American influencer will be releasing a new line of clothing as part of the Boohoo Plus range.

The thing I love most about this collection is that the clothing included is stylish and encourages women to embrace their shape. In many cases, plus size clothing differ to what is available in order areas of the store or website. I’ve witnessed this first hand having previously worked in retail. Women would often get upset (or annoyed) that stylish clothing was not available in a plus size. Boohoo are combating this and proving that no matter what size the label says, you can look your best. I think more retailers need to get on board with this mind-set!

I think Boohoo’s collaboration actually marks a pivotal stand against bullying and judgemental mindsets towards those who may not fit into a particular size. I personally believe that once you are healthy and happy then your size shouldn’t be something used against you. Size doesn’t determine who you are and it certainly shouldn’t determine your beauty and style.

So hats off to Boohoo who have proved that they are backing all shapes and sizes ❤

Product Review; Whiter Teeth at Home

Hey Guys,

So it’s Monday yet again and I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Today’s post is about getting whiter teeth at home and of course on a budget!

I am a fanatic about teeth and I am on a mission to improve mine where possible. I am quite self conscious about my own teeth. You may have noticed I don’t always do a big ‘open mouthed’ smile in pictures. This is because I dislike my teeth A LOT. I am in the process of getting invisalign and I will be doing upcoming posts on my own personal experience with them, so watch this space.

As I am currently awaiting my moulds, I don’t think it’s appropriate to get my teeth whitened professionally, as soon they are going to be covered by the retainer. I do however want my teeth as white as they can be for the time being. I find a lot of ‘whitening’ toothpastes don’t actually work. To be honest I don’t think it’s possible to fully achieve the Hollywood smile from at home products especially if you’re a coffee addict like myself. I have however come across a tooth paste that has made my teeth significantly whiter and I would highly recommend it:

The only place that I can find this product is Superdrug. I go to the one in The Square, Tallaght. The toothpaste costs about €6.00 but it’s the only toothpaste that has made a real difference without being too abrasive. I have sensitive teeth but it hasn’t impacted me in that aspect at all. It’s great for anyone who doesn’t want to splash out on professional whitening but still wants brighter teeth.

Be warned the toothpaste comes out black as it contains charcoal to aid in the whitening process. This is normal, don’t feel like there is something wrong with yours!

You’re Beautiful

Hey Guys,

The purpose of this post came out of pure coincidence, however I felt it was necessary. Last night I was googling ‘how to make yourself fall asleep’ because my brain just does not turn off as of late. When I got to the ‘yourself’ part of my sentence, the list of suggestions that came up, were slightly disturbing;

  1. How to make yourself look completely different
  2. How to make yourself look like another person
  3. How to make yourself beautiful

Is this really what people are googling?! Don’t get me wrong I am a lover of makeup and fake tan etc but I don’t want to look completely different? I think there is a large difference between making the best out of your assets and wanting to completely change yourself.

I exercise yes to look good, but also to feel good. I’m not doing it for anyone else. The same can be said for makeup. I love experimenting with products and trying out different looks, but I don’t think I could imagine changing myself completely and that is coming from someone who isn’t that confident with self image! Yes there are certain things I would like to alter, but who doesn’t have that feeling? It is however a worrying trend that more and more girls are going to extremes to effectively become some one else.

There has always been pressure on both men and women to adhere to society’s version of ‘beautiful’ but I thought we had come a bit further in terms of what beauty can be defined as. I thought uniqueness was now being embraced and slowly but surely it was becoming more acceptable to be (and look like) yourself.

We all know the phrase: ‘don’t try to look like the girl in the magazine, because she doesn’t even look like that’ and it has a point! I don’t judge anyone who opts for plastic surgery or other methods of altering their appearance, provided it’s for nobody else but themselves! Unfortunately I think many girls dream of looking like the girl on the front cover. I’m guilty of this too, but I think my cynical side can kick in where I realise they don’t really look like that. This tends to make me feel better about my bad hair day!

I don’t know however if celebrities and models can claim sole responsibility for us ladies feeling insecure and in some cases inadequate. I personally think the majority now know the effects of photo-shop and we see pictures of celebs with no makeup now online quite often. I think the issue arises within a much smaller circle. At the end of the day, people can be mean. Hurtful words seem to consistently be a form of communication in the day to day. In some cases it may not be intended to be as damaging as it realistically is, however this doesn’t undo the effects. You can’t take back an insult that has genuinely hurt someone.There’s a lot to be said for Thumper’s wise words. Don’t be the reason someone types in the above search criteria. Be the one who makes some one feel better about their insecurities. Be kind, always.

At the end of the day, we all want the perfect body, the perfect hair, the perfect clothes. But who gets to decide what is perfect? Everyone’s perception of beauty is different. That’s what makes it beautiful 🙂 Confidence and a genuine smile is the most attractive thing a person can have. It’s a pity we are so hard on ourselves that we sometimes lose the things that make us seem so beautiful to others!

Guide to Getting Fit & Healthy

Hey Guys,

I know from experience that the majority of us ladies start the New Year hoping to change our eating habits and achieve the body of our dreams! I am always the first to say that I am certainly not a fitness or weight loss expert, I do however want to look and feel good and so I’m always looking for tips to stay motivated. It is due to this that I have decided to interview four different girls about their own personal motivations and success. I have chosen the four girls based on the fact that every one of them work full time and have other commitments. They don’t get to spend all day working out and preparing food. They work around their schedule and endure the same struggles as the rest of us. Each of the girls is at different stages and have their own specific goals, so I’m hoping that everyone reading this will take something from the tips they give!

Fit & Healthy Girl No. 1

1. What is your biggest vice?

My biggest vice is going out! I don’t mind the calories consumed with alcohol as I normally  drink vodka (one of the lowest calorie alcoholic drinks) but a night out nearly always ends up in a takeaway and a constant binge the next day.

2. How do you over come this?

I do try to limit my nights out now to special occasions, as I don’t even enjoy drinking any more due to feeling so crap the next day and knowing that I will be hungover and wanting to binge. Also if I know that I have a big night out coming up, I will allow the next day to be my treat day for the week and make sure that I am consuming lots of water.

3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about health & fitness?

Keep it simple! We’ve all fallen for juice diets and going ‘no carbs’ for four days, but diets don’t work. In order to lose weight it’s all about a lifestyle change and not a fad diet! A healthy lifestyle change can be kept simple, just try to limit junk food to one day a week and try exercise three or four times a week. Again keep it simple; a gym membership is not required to get fit and lose weight. A few long walks will help or challenge yourself to do a 5k and you will see some serious results.

It’s also important to remember that you didn’t gain weight over night so you won’t lose it as quick either! Be consistent and keep it simple. Oh and try drink two litres of water a day, it’s great for weight loss but your skin will thank you for it too!

4. What has kept you motivated?

I don’t think that there is any better feeling than being healthy and strong. My motivation for going for a run or taking a spin class is the feeling I get afterwards, knowing that my body will benefit and my mood will improve. It can be hard to stay motivated but once you get into a routine, you will love it. It takes 21 days to break a habit

so take the next 21 days to improve your healthy eating and commit yourself to a walk three times a week. Of course you’ll enjoy that treat on Saturday night even more knowing that yo worked your ass off all week!

Fit & Healthy Girl No. 2

1. What is your biggest vice? 

My biggest vice would be chocolate.

2. How do you over come this?

I have a small amount every night. I find going cold turkey just drags you down and I end up binging on Nutella!

3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about health & fitness?

In terms of diet, the best advice I’ve ever received is to treat your body like a furnace; you need to add fuel to keep it burning so eating small amounts more often. Also drink lots of water as the more you drink the less water you retain. In terms of training; high intensity interval training burns more than hours of cardio as you will keep burning calories for 24 hours after. So skip the treadmill and stepper and start doing burpees and press ups.

4. What has kept you motivated?

The best motivation for me is seeing results. If you take a picture every week in the same clothes you will be so impressed that you will keep going. Also I had an injury and didn’t train properly for so long because I was afraid I would do more damage. Now I work around it and still see results which means no matter what your strength capabilities, if you stay determined you will see results. So that is inspirational too.

1. What is your biggest vice?

My biggest vice is sour jellies and Cadburys chocolate, I have such a sweet tooth.

2. How do you over come this?

In order to overcome giving in to my vice, I look back over old pictures which puts me off eating chocolate and jellies as I don’t want to go back to that ‘before’ stage!

3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about health & fitness?

The best advice I’ve received is to keep ‘trucking on’ no matter how much you want to quit  and also to never let a bad day become a bad week. I am in Unislim and I never miss a weigh in, even though sometimes I may feel embarrassed. It keeps me on track because I know I could do major damage if I don’t go to a class. Also I think before and after photos are a great idea.

  4. What has kept you motivated?

Seeing results really is the best motivation you can get. I hit ‘like’ on all the Facebook and Instagram motivational pages but really the motivation comes from myself and seeing that I really can do it. Even though I haven’t yet reached my final target, I have come a long way. I have old photos scattered around the house which helps keep me motivated.

1. What is your biggest vice?

My biggest vice would be crisps, once I start I find it very hard to stop!

2. How do you over come this?

I overcome this by having them in moderation. I never deprive myself of something I am craving. I buy multi packs of my favourite crisps and have one packet a day, usually at night time when I can relax and really enjoy them.

3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about health & fitness?

The best advice I have ever received is everything in moderation and to never be too hard on yourself if you go off the rails a bit, because it can send you in the completely wrong direction.

 4. What has kept you motivated?

What keeps me motivated the most is looking back at how far I have come from last year. The difference I feel about myself now and my new confidence keeps me motivated.

 I personally find it interesting, gaining an insight into other people’s habits and motivational tips. Each of the girls interviewed may have different weight loss and fitness goals but they do have one goal in common; looking and feeling their best. I hope that anyone who reads this can take something from it. It’s not realistic to put yourself under too much pressure and to deprive yourself, as each of the girls stated above. If this has helped each of them become fit and healthy then it surely proves that moderation and persistence will far out weigh starvation and deprivation!
