Beginning of my Invisalign Journey

Hey Guys,

I hope you are all having a wonderful day ❤ I’ve recently got Invisalign and thought I would fill you all in. I probably should have done some reading up on the side effects prior to investing in the aligners, so hopefully this can help anyone thinking of making the next step!

After the aligners were put in, I received three packs which are to be changed every two weeks, so I don’t have to go back to the dentist for 8 weeks. I also received an instruction DVD and a case to hold the aligners when they are removed.

I wasn’t expecting to get my Invisalign for another two weeks but my moulds came back early. This is obviously wonderful as I’m happy to get started as soon as possible. I would however have preferred to mentally prepare myself as I really have a fear of the dentist. Anyway, instead of removing any of my teeth, they were filed down. My jawline is too small for all my teeth so this may not be necessary in all cases so don’t panic!

The filing was surprisingly not too bad; more an odd sensation as opposed to painful. If any of you have had your eyebrows threaded you will understand that weird feeling, that doesn’t hurt but isn’t pleasant.

Here’s a close up of the first set of aligners

My teeth are killing me! I feel like there is constant pressure pushing down on them (I know that is the point but it’s uncomfortable!)  My lips are also quite sore, particularly the top one. I feel like I look like I’m constantly pouting, but not in a good way, in a ‘I look like a duck’ kind of way.

My biggest issue is eating. I can’t bite into anything hard and so have been living on smoothies / milkshakes, soup and porridge. I am starving! The aligners need to be removed when eating and this is very painful. When they are removed my teeth are throbbing and I still can’t bring myself to eat anything that requires chewing.

Anyone who follows me on Instagram will have seen that my best friend bought me these ‘sore teeth friendly’ chocolate options:

She is the best and no I am not sharing her or the chocolate! 😛

I have been told that the pain eases after the first week. I am praying that is does. It is something that I really did not take into account when getting the Invisalign put in. If anyone reading this is considering getting them, then be warned of the pain. It’s quite difficult in work, especially as I am in the first week of my new job.

Anyone experiencing tooth aches or have braces, these bad boys are the only thing stopping the pain, they are strong though so obviously only ideal for short term use!

At the end of the day though, I have always been self conscious of my teeth and I do feel positive that I am proactively tackling that issue. I will keep you updated as I progress through to the next set in two weeks.

These are a few of my Favourite Things

Hey Guys,

I hope you’re all having a great weekend! Sorry I haven’t been posting as much this week, I’ve been really sick and I’ve  just been sleeping after work. I am thankfully on the mend and the sun is shinning here so I’m in an absolutely great form 🙂 so I decided to do a piece on  few of my favourite things this week.

Favourite Thing No. 1 ; Music

There’s enormous hype over the 50 Shades of Grey Movie hitting our screens this week. What has caught my attention the most however is the soundtrack. Slowed down, sexy, sultry towns of Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love is replaying in my head over and over. I’m loving Sofia Karlberg’s version, her voice is amazing!

Favourite Thing No. 2 ; Food

Yes food will always make my list of favourite things, lets be honest. I find when I’m sick I look for comfort food. This week I have been loving scones and muffins (all in moderation) from Keogh’s on Trinity Street, Dublin 2. They are handmade and come in a range of different flavours; my favourite being the pear and vanilla! If you are in the city centre be sure to check them out.

Favourite Thing No. 3 Body Lotion & Hand Cream

The Royal Jelly Collection from Boots is my new favourite body lotion and hand cream. It’s so soft and creamy and it smells absolutely amazing. I love putting it on after a shower. The hand cream is also great for keeping your hands soft and smelling divine. Both are really reasonable (can’t remember off hand but approx. €4.00 – €5.00) so are a guilt free indulgence.

Favourite Thing No. 4 ; Alexa Chung

I’ve been reading Alexa Chung’s book ‘IT’ and I’ve been really enjoying it. I really love her unique style. She always manages to perfectly combine sophisticated, lady like style with a hippie chick look. I always admire someone who breaks away from the fashion ‘norm’ and even more so when they do it successfully. I think her looks are ideal for some Spring, Summer style inspiration!

Favourite Thing No. 5; Lazy Days Off

As I said I was sick this week but as work has been so busy lately, I couldn’t justify taking a day off. Since Monday I have been counting down the days (more so than usual) until I could stay in my PJs, stay makeup free and basically wallow in my sickness! I usually never take a proper day off, even at weekends I generally have quite a lot to do. This weekend however I think my body just needed to slow down. I can get quite irritated when I am sitting still for too long as I like to be busy, but I have to say this chilled weekend has done me the world of good. A lot of chocolate was consumed however to replace the alcohol.

So that’s my week summed up by my favourite things. I hope you enjoyed and are all having a lovely Sunday, doing whatever it is that makes you happy 🙂

A Sunday well spent, leads to a week of content

Confessions of a Secret Snacker

Hey Guys,

Last week I was full of good intentions for kick starting my healthy eating regime, however I wasn’t as good as I had intended! Upon evaluation, I think I ate healthily for about 60% of the week. This is realistically not good enough. My main downfall came from food preparation.

Although I was initially motivated, I found myself craving unhealthy food come mid week. This is mainly down to two reasons; the first being that I have become accustomed to unhealthy food over the Christmas season and so now my body is craving fatty food. The second reason is definitely down to unimaginative meals. I really dislike boring food, it leaves me unsatisfied. I tend to pick at chocolate and crisps if the meal I ate was bland. Even if I am full, I will still snack on unhealthy food. That was one of my biggest downfalls last week. As I was tired (my first week back in work) I became unmotivated to plan my meals for I’d say about half the week. I became bored and so reached for the bad stuff. This week I am going to do my best to stay at least one day ahead with my food prep.

Last Night’s Food Prep for Today:

IMG_0529

The weekend was by far my biggest downfall. It always is. Despite the fact I didn’t consume even one drop of alcohol, I still managed to eat like I was hungover; i.e. eat crap! Again relating back to the food prep aspect, I was lazy at the weekend and so kept grabbing quick fix snacks which were high in sugar and saturated fat. I also went for dinner and the cinema so I can’t even comprehend how many calories were consumed on both outings. I think it’s best I don’t know! I do however think weekends off are for enjoying, but maybe just not so much in my case. I need to keep my organisational levels up and this will hopefully reduce my unhealthy eating habits.

Sums me up:

A positive aspect from last week was that I did in fact work out so I’m hoping that it may have saved me slightly. I know the saying that you can never out train a bad diet, but I do believe a workout helps you feel better. I’m not a huge fan of the weighing scales and choose to go by how my jeans fit and how I look sans clothing. So I think my workouts did in fact rescue me this week. This however will not provide room for progress, it will simply aid in maintaining my current physique (which is not what I am aiming for!) thus proving I need to get my ass into gear with my diet.
Although my carb intake is still a little higher than I would like, I did manage to avoid white bread and pasta, which is a small victory that I’m claiming from last week. Sweet potato is also my go to healthy carb when I’m feeling hungry, it is nutritious, filling and tasty! Perfect! This week I need to up the vegetable and fruit intake though as replacement for so much carbs. Again I feel it’s important to reiterate that I am working towards a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Not a strict, depressing diet!

I’m hoping next week’s evaluation is more successful. I am already keeping note of today’s eating antics! In the mean time I hope you all have a happy & healthy week 🙂

5 Ways to Brighten your Day

Hey Guys,

The usual Monday blues seem to have escalated for this particular week. Everywhere I looked today people were complaining about lack of sleep, not wanting to go to work etc via social media. To be fair I was right there with them. I think as the festive season is now in full swing, so too are the alcoholic beverages and late nights. This usually results in a not so funday Monday. So I decided to draw up a small list of things that you can do to brighten up the rest of your week (hopefully!)

Eat Chocolate

Studies have shown that  who isn’t happy when they are eating chocolate? No explanation needed.

Listen to Music

Music has long been an excellent mood enhancer. Grab your earphones and play an upbeat tune that makes you want to shake that bum! Avoid sad, love songs as, well this isn’t going to help brighten anyone’s day, in fact it is likely to do the opposite. No opt instead for a song that will put a smile on your face whilst singing a long. My tune for today is Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars.

 Make a List

It has been proven that if you write yourself a list for the day, your mood will get a boost. You feel proactive and organised as you have set yourself clear goals for the day. These may be as small as picking something up in the shop or getting petrol. It doesn’t matter. When you get to tick off each ‘to do’ you will also get a sense of satisfaction. Get writing and ticking.

Be Kind

Being nice is a choice, I have long said this. Being kind towards someone will not only make them feel good, it gives you an added boost too. A kind gesture can be as large or small as you choose. It is not something that requires measurement. Think of how good you will feel once you have made someone else happy.

 Resist the Urge to Complain

This is completely ironic coming from me. I am a grade one complainer, particularly when I am tired or hungover (both of which I am today!) however I read before that the idea is to trick yourself into thinking you are not in bad humour. Acting positively and avoiding negative thoughts will help to persuade your brain to feel happy. It sounds really cheesy I know, but I have been trying it so far today and well I haven’t slapped anyone, so in my mind it is working remarkably well.

So go fourth and become a Positive Polly tomorrow. Spend your day being nice, dancing your ass off and eating loads of chocolate!

Confessions of a Secret Snacker

Hey Guys,

Sorry I haven’t kept up to date with my Secret Snacker posts, I have a lot to confess! Considering that we are now in December and in full Christmas mode, I won’t be too hard on myself. I think I will rate my over all snacking habits as medium. This is mainly due to the fact that there is so much food currently residing in my house and  it is not only half of what’s to come. The picture left could probably represent only one of my presses. So I think the fact that I haven’t been found in a food coma surrounded by said food’s wrappers, is an accomplishment in itself.

I have been quite good with my meals throughout the week. I’m still opting for wholemeal carbs and trying to incorporate protein into each meal. I’m basically trying not to over indulge, however I am slipping still at the weekends. I am slightly losing hope about my weekend eating habits. As Christmas is fast approaching, so too are the numerous nights out and dinner dates! I’m just not willing to sacrifice my social life at my favourite time of year. Alcohol and chocolate have been both my biggest loves and biggest downfalls to date. It really is a love/hate affair.

I am craving carbs due to the cold weather and find that when I deprive myself, I binge as I am still hungry. It is always the case in the Winter that when you are cold, your appetite increases as you are burning more calories to stay warm. I am therefore trying to move away from my usually snacking eating habits and incorporate larger meals into my daily diet. However by it’s very definition, my HABIT of snacking is not so easily kicked. I have noticed over the last two weeks I am in fact eating the bigger meals but also snacking, in many cases without even realising.

I am also craving cheese which is very unlike me. I have however developed a new found obsession with it and want it with every meal. Not good for the waistline and I find that my craving is actually leading me to unhealthier foods that I’m having with the cheese; burgers, pasta bake etc.

True Story:

On my good days I am trying to trick my body and substitute chocolate with Nakd bars. They are completely vegan and definitely a better option to my usual bar (or 3) of chocolate. My favourites are Cashew Cookie, Pecan Pie and Rhubarb & Custard. I know one a day is optimal but I find myself hungry on my journey home from work and sometimes opt for a second. I think I really need to work on the convenience food addiction. Homemade food is much better, I just need to stop being so lazy!

I think I may need to re-evaluate my Medium rating!

Until next week My Loves,
