Whiter Teeth at Home

We have always been told that the food and drink we eat will reflect on our skin and waistline, however it also impacts on the appearance of our teeth! Being Irish and from a nation of tea drinkers and more recently now coffee drinkers, having white teeth can be a struggle. Now there are many teeth whitening services available but these can be quite expensive so most of us don’t purchase them that frequently. I also think that most home teeth whitening kits are only ok and can also end up being quite expensive relative to the results you get. So as I am a big fan of home remedies, I thought I would investigate a few different options. Lemon juice and baking soda is probably the most common remedy that people use for at home whitening. I did however stumble across another: Strawberries and baking soda so I said I would give it a try, plus I figured it would taste a lot better than using lemon.

It is important to remember to use baking soda NOT baking powder. Baking soda has a lower ph and will therefore be less abrasive on your teeth in comparison to baking powder which is more acidic. Strawberries however are acidic and so it is recommended that this formula only be used once or twice a week to avoid eroding the enamel on your teeth.

This is so simple, quick and easy:

  • Chop up approx 2 strawberries (varies by size of each)
  • Half a tbsp of baking soda
  • Crush the strawberries until they create a pulp like consistency (doesn’t look too pretty!)
  • Mix with the baking soda
  • Apply to teeth (leave for 5 mins then rinse)

Now obviously this is not going to make miraculous changes after one use, but I did notice a difference. My teeth just seemed a lot brighter which is more than any chemical home whitener has done after one use. Here is a pic of before and after my first time to use this remedy:

There are many sites that state using baking soda on your toothbrush is just as effective, however baking soda needs an acidic substance such as strawberries or lemon to activate it. This means that on its own baking soda may not be as effective, plus it does not taste the greatest!

Hope you guys like this little remedy, let me know if there’s anything you would like to add!
