See the Good

Be the Change you wish to see in the World

-Ghandi

Hey Guys,

Today I wanted to share three videos with you that really made me smile. I’m sick today and am admittedly quite a bad patient so the fact these videos managed to make me smile, I figured they have to be good.

There seems to be nothing but negative news at the moment and it’s easy to see why people are losing faith in humanity. There’s no denying that there are plenty of bad things going on in the world, but there are also great things happening everyday.

No matter how big or small, I think it is important to try and focus on the positive things that happen around us everyday. Don’t feel that your acts of kindness are being over shadowed because I can guarantee they make a difference to someone.

And finally, I know it’s everywhere but if anyone else out there needs cheering up like I did, then watch it as many times as you need. The cuteness does not fade!

I hope you all had a great weekend and are enjoying your Sunday evening. It’s the first day of Spring so make sure to kick some ass this week 🙂

You’re Beautiful

Hey Guys,

The purpose of this post came out of pure coincidence, however I felt it was necessary. Last night I was googling ‘how to make yourself fall asleep’ because my brain just does not turn off as of late. When I got to the ‘yourself’ part of my sentence, the list of suggestions that came up, were slightly disturbing;

  1. How to make yourself look completely different
  2. How to make yourself look like another person
  3. How to make yourself beautiful

Is this really what people are googling?! Don’t get me wrong I am a lover of makeup and fake tan etc but I don’t want to look completely different? I think there is a large difference between making the best out of your assets and wanting to completely change yourself.

I exercise yes to look good, but also to feel good. I’m not doing it for anyone else. The same can be said for makeup. I love experimenting with products and trying out different looks, but I don’t think I could imagine changing myself completely and that is coming from someone who isn’t that confident with self image! Yes there are certain things I would like to alter, but who doesn’t have that feeling? It is however a worrying trend that more and more girls are going to extremes to effectively become some one else.

There has always been pressure on both men and women to adhere to society’s version of ‘beautiful’ but I thought we had come a bit further in terms of what beauty can be defined as. I thought uniqueness was now being embraced and slowly but surely it was becoming more acceptable to be (and look like) yourself.

We all know the phrase: ‘don’t try to look like the girl in the magazine, because she doesn’t even look like that’ and it has a point! I don’t judge anyone who opts for plastic surgery or other methods of altering their appearance, provided it’s for nobody else but themselves! Unfortunately I think many girls dream of looking like the girl on the front cover. I’m guilty of this too, but I think my cynical side can kick in where I realise they don’t really look like that. This tends to make me feel better about my bad hair day!

Jessica Alba Before & After Photoshop 2

(I personally don’t think either look bad in the before pictures!)

I don’t know however if celebrities and models can claim sole responsibility for us ladies feeling insecure and in some cases inadequate. I personally think the majority now know the effects of photo-shop and we see pictures of celebs with no makeup now online quite often. I think the issue arises within a much smaller circle. At the end of the day, people can be mean. Hurtful words seem to consistently be a form of communication in the day to day. In some cases it may not be intended to be as damaging as it realistically is, however this doesn’t undo the effects. You can’t take back an insult that has genuinely hurt someone. There’s a lot to be said for Thumper’s wise words. Don’t be the reason someone types in the above search criteria. Be the one who makes some one feel better about their insecurities. Be kind, always.

At the end of the day, we all want the perfect body, the perfect hair, the perfect clothes. But who gets to decide what is perfect? Everyone’s perception of beauty is different. That’s what makes it beautiful 🙂 Confidence and a genuine smile is the most attractive thing a person can have. It’s a pity we are so hard on ourselves that we sometimes lose the things that make us seem so beautiful to others!

Guide to Getting Fit & Healthy

Hey Guys,

I know from experience that the majority of us ladies start the New Year hoping to change our eating habits and achieve the body of our dreams! I am always the first to say that I am certainly not a fitness or weight loss expert, I do however want to look and feel good and so I’m always looking for tips to stay motivated. It is due to this that I have decided to interview four different girls about their own personal motivations and success. I have chosen the four girls based on the fact that every one of them work full time and have other commitments. They don’t get to spend all day working out and preparing food. They work around their schedule and endure the same struggles as the rest of us. Each of the girls is at different stages and have their own specific goals, so I’m hoping that everyone reading this will take something from the tips they give!

Fit & Healthy Girl No. 1

1. What is your biggest vice?

My biggest vice is going out! I don’t mind the calories consumed with alcohol as I normally  drink vodka (one of the lowest calorie alcoholic drinks) but a night out nearly always ends up in a takeaway and a constant binge the next day.

2. How do you over come this?

I do try to limit my nights out now to special occasions, as I don’t even enjoy drinking any more due to feeling so crap the next day and knowing that I will be hungover and wanting to binge. Also if I know that I have a big night out coming up, I will allow the next day to be my treat day for the week and make sure that I am consuming lots of water.

3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about health & fitness?

Keep it simple! We’ve all fallen for juice diets and going ‘no carbs’ for four days, but diets don’t work. In order to lose weight it’s all about a lifestyle change and not a fad diet! A healthy lifestyle change can be kept simple, just try to limit junk food to one day a week and try exercise three or four times a week. Again keep it simple; a gym membership is not required to get fit and lose weight. A few long walks will help or challenge yourself to do a 5k and you will see some serious results.

It’s also important to remember that you didn’t gain weight over night so you won’t lose it as quick either! Be consistent and keep it simple. Oh and try drink two litres of water a day, it’s great for weight loss but your skin will thank you for it too!

4. What has kept you motivated?

I don’t think that there is any better feeling than being healthy and strong. My motivation for going for a run or taking a spin class is the feeling I get afterwards, knowing that my body will benefit and my mood will improve. It can be hard to stay motivated but once you get into a routine, you will love it. It takes 21 days to break a habit

so take the next 21 days to improve your healthy eating and commit yourself to a walk three times a week. Of course you’ll enjoy that treat on Saturday night even more knowing that yo worked your ass off all week!

Fit & Healthy Girl No. 2

1. What is your biggest vice?

My biggest vice would be chocolate.

2. How do you over come this?

I have a small amount every night. I find going cold turkey just drags you down and I end up binging on Nutella!

3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about health & fitness?

In terms of diet, the best advice I’ve ever received is to treat your body like a furnace; you need to add fuel to keep it burning so eating small amounts more often. Also drink lots of water as the more you drink the less water you retain. In terms of training; high intensity interval training burns more than hours of cardio as you will keep burning calories for 24 hours after. So skip the treadmill and stepper and start doing burpees and press ups.

4. What has kept you motivated?

The best motivation for me is seeing results. If you take a picture every week in the same clothes you will be so impressed that you will keep going. Also I had an injury and didn’t train properly for so long because I was afraid I would do more damage. Now I work around it and still see results which means no matter what your strength capabilities, if you stay determined you will see results. So that is inspirational too.

Fit & Healthy Girl No. 3

1. What is your biggest vice?

My biggest vice is sour jellies and Cadburys chocolate, I have such a sweet tooth.

2. How do you over come this?

In order to overcome giving in to my vice, I look back over old pictures which puts me off eating chocolate and jellies as I don’t want to go back to that ‘before’ stage!

3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about health & fitness?

The best advice I’ve received is to keep ‘trucking on’ no matter how much you want to quit  and also to never let a bad day become a bad week. I am in Unislim and I never miss a weigh in, even though sometimes I may feel embarrassed. It keeps me on track because I know I could do major damage if I don’t go to a class. Also I think before and after photos are a great idea.

  4. What has kept you motivated?

Seeing results really is the best motivation you can get. I hit ‘like’ on all the Facebook and Instagram motivational pages but really the motivation comes from myself and seeing that I really can do it. Even though I haven’t yet reached my final target, I have come a long way. I have old photos scattered around the house which helps keep me motivated.

Fit & Healthy Girl No. 4

1. What is your biggest vice?

My biggest vice would be crisps, once I start I find it very hard to stop!

2. How do you over come this?

I overcome this by having them in moderation. I never deprive myself of something I am craving. I buy multi packs of my favourite crisps and have one packet a day, usually at night time when I can relax and really enjoy them.

3. What is the best advice you’ve ever received about health & fitness?

The best advice I have ever received is everything in moderation and to never be too hard on yourself if you go off the rails a bit, because it can send you in the completely wrong direction.

 4. What has kept you motivated?

What keeps me motivated the most is looking back at how far I have come from last year. The difference I feel about myself now and my new confidence keeps me motivated.

I personally find it interesting, gaining an insight into other people’s habits and motivational tips. Each of the girls interviewed may have different weight loss and fitness goals but they do have one goal in common; looking and feeling their best. I hope that anyone who reads this can take something from it. It’s not realistic to put yourself under too much pressure and to deprive yourself, as each of the girls stated above. If this has helped each of them become fit and healthy then it surely proves that moderation and persistence will far out weigh starvation and deprivation!

Protect Your Skin Against Winter

Hey Guys,

At the moment the weather here in Ireland is starting to get colder and I have a feeling January is going to be a seriously cold month! This Winter weather can be quite tough on your skin. From the brisk, frosty weather to the harsh wind, our skin really does have to withstand a lot throughout this time. That’s not even including the heating that we are now constantly facing; whether it’s at home, in the office or even in shopping centres and restaurants. Our skin is literally going from one extreme to another. So in order to prevent your skin from getting dried out and over sensitive from the above factors I’ve compiled a list of the best methods to protect your skin throughout the colder months.

Change to Gentle Products: Skin can be more sensitive throughout the colder months and so strong products that are usually fine, can end up irritating it. I have sensitive skin anyway so I look for gentle products all the time. I think swapping a regular toner for a softer alternative can make a huge difference when skin is under added pressure. Instead of using toner, I have now introduced Rosewater and Witch-hazel and I love it. It’s really gentle and doesn’t leave skin feeling raw. The witch hazel also helps prevent breakouts on the skin, which of course is a huge plus! It is available in Boots at the pharmacy counter and it is approx. €4.00.

Rethink your Moisturizer: I know that people often say that too much moisture can cause spots and breakouts. While this can be the case, skin requires higher levels of moisture during colder periods. In order to prevent any breakouts, think about changing your moisturizer as opposed to over moisturising. One that works well in Spring and Summer may not be sufficient for the harsher Winter months. If your moisturizer is not giving you nivea1what you need, you may find your skin getting dryer. This often leads to people over moisturizing which then causes the breakouts. Instead switch to a stronger oil based option. Always look for ‘non-clogging’ alternatives to avoid pores being well obviously being clogged. Night creams are generally a good option as they create a protective layer around your skin.

Nivea is always one of my favourites as it is so soft and gentle. There are a number of different Nivea moisturizers and night creams IMG_0318available. Have a look at what is the most suitable for your own particular skin type. These products can be picked up in the majority of retailers such as Boots, Debenhams and Tesco, Dunnes etc. Prices vary between €5.00 and €10.00 and it always lasts ages! I also use the Nivea Cleansing Milk as it soothes skin whilst removing the makeup. It costs €6.99 in the majority of retailers too.

Avoid hot water on the face: This is true for all year around but particularly relevant for Winter. I am guilty of letting the warm eater hit my face in the shower but I am trying to avoid it now. Warm water dries out your skin and this combined with the false heat also drying it out, will strip essential oils will from your skin. It is also recommended that you apply moisturizer on face and body within two minutes of your shower and it is the most effective time to lock in the moisture.

Add in Oils & Milk: This one is more so for your body as opposed to your face but who doesn’t want soft,Product Image For Grapeseed Massage Base Oil supple skin all year round?! Add in some Olive or Grape seed oil to your shower  as it will help re-hydrate skin. Check out health food stores for these oils, Holland & Barrett stock them for €4.49. Alternatively  pop into your fridge and grab some whole milk to add to your shower. It will have the same effect and leave your skin feeling super soft.

As always the products and methods listed above won’t break the bank. They are all quite reasonable and can be done on a budget as we are not all millionaires who can splash out on expensive beauty products and procedures.

Embrace the Brow

Hey Guys,

The 90’s may be back when it comes to Fashion, but one thing that hasn’t returned is the over plucked, super skinny brows associated with that particular era. I am the first one to hold my hands up and admit that I too fell victim to the barely there brow. Thankfully that look is now well and truly gone, with full length and thickness being the main focus. All you have to do is look at the hottest models at the moment, all of which have certainly embraced the brow. Cara Delevigne is one of the best eye brow inspirations I’ve seen in a long time! Unfortunately due to years of wanting smaller eyebrows, I still need to fill in a few areas where the hair is still thinner.

Eyebrow’s shape your face and can make such a difference to your look. I have become so particular about eyebrows and I always try ensure mine are not too thick or too thin and have a nice arch (the arch is key ladies!)

It is due to this that Sleek Makeup’s latest brow kit has become my 96027226-2ultimate makeup essential. The product comes in a neat little compact, mirror included and is perfect for slipping into your bag. With a pigmented wax for shaping and a powder for setting also included, it is ideal. It is a complete bargain at €10.00 online and €12.00 in Boots. You can choose from four different shades; Light, Dark, Black & Extra Dark I opt for the ‘Dark’ colour as my hair, eyebrows and eyelashes are quite dark and this matches perfectly. I would be a bit cautious when it comes to using the Extra Dark and Black due to the dark colouring of the one I already use.

At €10.00 it is an absolute steal so it’s definitely worth a trial, so make sure to check out http://www.sleekmakeup.com
