At the moment Debs season is getting into full swing, there are so many girls probably stressing over finding the perfect dress as I type this. The boys really do have it easy for this one, they rent or buy the tux and voila they are done. Us ladies however not only have to find a dress we love and that actually fits/looks nice on, we also have to think of hair, makeup, accessories and so on. This is generally the case for most occasions. The boys get to relax in their new suit whilst the girls are stressed out resembling a she devil on a mission. So, I figured as I have done the whole debs thing, I would do an article based on the different options for dresses out there and throw in a few tips that I learned first hand from experience.
I think what happens in many cases, girls feel they have to get their dress from a particular boutique. This is great if you find something you like. If however you cannot find something then don’t settle. Try the high-street and online retailers for some beautiful dresses. You’re also more likely to get a bargain purchasing from one of these. ASOS are especially great for offering Tall and Petite ranges for dresses!
I personally love a bit of embellishment, I think it adds instant glam. Keeping your beaded choice to a singular colour, preferably a pastel or muted navy, will ensure your outfit remains elegant without risking the infamous ‘gypsy wedding’ look!
Not everyone wants to blow their budget on their dress. This is completely understandable, there is a lot to pay for in terms of tickets, transport as well as all the accessories and beauty treatments required for the day. I spent a small fortune on my dress but since it was dry cleaned, it has been sitting in my mom’s wardrobe. I haven’t even attempted to wear it. So if you think you will do the same, maybe it’s worth looking at a cheaper alternative. If you don’t fancy spending a lot on your dress then have a look at some great budget buys I found. There are many more out there so make sure to shop around!
Pastel colouring is my favourite for occasion dressing, particularly in the summer. The debs signals one of our last chances to wear a summer inspired dress before the Autumn and Winter colours come into play. Just be careful to avoid any spillages near your dress. I wore a white and baby blue dress for mine and a small bit of makeup got spilled onto it. In the end it was fine but I could of done without the added stress. Water proof mascara is crucial for moments like these!
Not all girls feel comfortable wearing the full length formal dress or gown. At the end of the day wear something you feel comfortable in. Nothing will look good if you do not feel your best in it. Confidence and a small can make any outfit look good, so they are key for the debs. Just because you’re not going for the full length, doesn’t mean you cannot go for the full glamour effect. The cream mid length dress will still add glamour, elegance and class to your look. If your unsure about the length why not compromise with this beautiful embellished number, which gives you the best of both worlds.
Tall Girls do not feel that you cannot wear high heels, wear them! It’s your day too. If you really are self conscious about being taller than your friends, then opt for the ever so stylish mid heel. This heel is all over the catwalk and will add a designer appeal to your dress, however it is strictly for sandals only! To be honest these heels are perfect for us vertically challenged girls as well!!
It can be difficult ti find a formal bag that is still stylish and at a reasonable price. A lot of the high street stores only have these types of bags when its getting into the Christmas period. Newlook however have occasion bags all year round. They are quite reasonable and at least you can re-use a bag like this for events like New Years Eve, college balls and weddings. It is definitely something worth investing in.
One of the most important tips I can give is: make sure you are wearing the correct underwear!!! No matter how beautiful the dress, ill-fitting underwear will only detract from your look. If you’re going for the strapless option, invest in a good strapless bra. A cheap version will leave you pulling it up all night and you won’t be able to make the most of the dance floor. I would definitely recommend Wonderbra’s strapless version (no this isn’t padded to maximise your cleavage) this bra actually has no padding but will stay put for the whole night, it’s the best one I’ve bought! It is a tad bit expensive at €47.50 (Debenhams) but it will last.
Hope you gals enjoy, happy shopping 🙂 x
